Abstract

For the third edition, the author has added a new chapter on associative algebras that includes the well known characterizations of the finite-dimensional division algebras over the real field (a theorem of Frobenius) and over a finite field (Wedderburn's theorem); polished and refined some arguments (such as the discussion of reflexivity, the rational canonical form, best approximations and the definitions of tensor products); upgraded some proofs that were originally done only for finite-dimensional/rank cases; added new theorems, including the spectral mapping theorem; considerably expanded the reference section with over a hundred references to books on linear algebra. From the reviews of the second edition: "In this 2nd edition, the author has rewritten the entire book and has added more than 100 pages of new materials....As in the previous edition, the text is well written and gives a thorough discussion of many topics of linear algebra and related fields...the exercises are rewritten and expanded....Overall, I found the book a very useful one....It is a suitable choice as a graduate text or as a reference book." Ali-Akbar Jafarian, ZentralblattMATH "This is a formidable volume, a compendium of linear algebra theory, classical and modern... The development of the subject is elegant...The proofs are neat...The exercise sets are good, with occasional hints given for the solution of trickier problems...It represents linear algebra and does so comprehensively." Abstract

This book presents a wide panorama of methods to investigate the spectral properties of block operator matrices. Particular emphasis is placed on classes of block operator matrices to which standard operator theoretical methods do not readily apply: non-self-adjoint block operator matrices, block operator matrices with unbounded entries, non-semibounded block operator matrices, and classes of block operator matrices arising in mathematical physics. The main topics include: localization of the spectrum by means of new concepts of numerical range; investigation of the essential spectrum; variation

Abstract

J-contractive and J-inner matrix valued functions have a wide range of applications in mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, control engineering and theory of systems and networks. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory of these functions with respect to the open upper half-plane, and a number of applications are also discussed. The first chapters develop the requisite background material from the geometry of finite dimensional spaces with an indefinite inner product, and the theory of the Nevanlinna class of matrix valued functions with bounded characteristic in the open upper half-plane (with attention to special subclasses). Subsequent chapters develop this theory to include associated pairs of inner matrix valued functions and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Special attention is paid to the subclasses of regular and strongly regular J-inner matrix valued functions, which play an essential role in the study of the extension and interpolation problems.

Abstract

In this volume, the authors construct a theory of weights on the log crystalline cohomologies of families of open smooth varieties in characteristic p>0, by defining and constructing four filtered complexes. Fundamental properties of these filtered complexes are proved, in particular the p-adic purity, the functionality of three filtered complexes, the weight-filtered base change formula, the weight-filtered Künneth formula, the weight-filtered Poincaré duality, and the E2-degeneration of p-adic weight spectral sequences. In addition, the authors state some theorems on the weight filtration and the slope filtration on the rigid cohomology of a separated scheme of finite type over a perfect field of characteristic p>0.

Abstract

Combinatorial algebraic topology is a fascinating and dynamic field at the crossroads of algebraic topology and discrete mathematics. This volume is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject in book form. The first part of the book constitutes a swift walk through the main tools of algebraic topology, including Stiefel-Whitney characteristic classes, which are needed for the later parts. Readers - graduate students and working mathematicians alike - will probably find particularly useful the second part, which contains an in-depth discussion of the major research techniques of combinatorial algebraic topology. Our presentation of standard topics is quite different from that of existing texts. In addition, several new themes, such as spectral sequences, are included. Although applications are sprinkled throughout the second part, they are principal focus of the third part, which is entirely devoted to developing the topological structure theory for graph homomorphisms. The main benefit for the reader will be the prospect of fairly quickly getting to the forefront of modern research in this active field.
